Random thoughts | Ohio State's friday game sacks high school’s bottom line


During the day, I’m a business reporter at The Dispatch, covering the economy, energy and jobs. At night and on weekends, I count money and pay bills in a volunteer capacity as treasurer of the Bloom-Carroll Athletic Boosters in Carroll, about 20 miles southeast of Columbus. As treasurer, I’m responsible for billing people or companies for services provided by boosters. Right now, I’ve got one ready for $700. The question is, who should get the bill: Ohio State? Northwestern? The Big Ten? Maybe Fox, ESPN and CBS, the networks that are paying the conference $2.64 billion over six years to show games on television? (The game aired on Big Ten Network, which is owned by Fox.) The bill represents my conservative estimate of our lost sales at the concession stand we operated this past Friday night.
