Do Ohio State’s College Football Playoff hopes benefit from Georgia’s loss?


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State football continues to make a compelling case for the No. 1 overall seed in the College Football Playoff, which will not release its first ranking until Nov. 5. The Buckeyes are strong in offensive and defensive scoring average, are far and away the favorite team of the Massey computer rankings index and have built a compelling strength-of-schedule argument thanks to the play of teams such as Cincinnati and Indiana. As such, the first upset to befall a playoff contender — Georgia’s home loss to South Carolina in overtime — has little effect on Ohio State’s postseason hopes. If the Buckeyes win out, they will go to the playoff. Based on the committee’s stated criteria, OSU seemed to already be well above the Bulldogs in the theoretical rankings.
