How Ohio State football’s Boom Ball joined the sideline turnover prop craze


COLUMBUS, Ohio – Ohio State football’s defenders vowed to return to the Silver Bullet standard of performance in 2019. Beginning with Saturday’s 34-10 victory over Michigan State, the Buckeyes made that focus more literal. Ohio State defensive players were seen passing around a silver football called the “Boom Ball.” The gimmick began during preseason camp, but linebacker Baron Browning said Saturday’s game — which featured three takeaways by the Buckeye defense — was the first time ball made its way to the field. He said defensive graduate assistant Kenny Anunike brought the ball to the locker room before the game. “It was mostly whoever gets a turnover, they get the Boom Ball the next day,” said Browning, who caused one takeaway when he tipped a pass intercepted by Jordan Fuller. “… It’s the little things.
