Michigan State won as a huge underdog at Ohio State in 1998 and must ‘play perfect’ to do it again


EAST LANSING – In November 1998, Michigan State took what had been a mediocre football team on the road for what was expected to be a slaughter. Ohio State was undefeated and the No. 1 team in the country. The Spartans, in their fourth season under coach Nick Saban, were just 4-4 and had an 0-3 record on the road. The Buckeyes were favored by 27.5 points. It was supposed to be the next step in a national championship season for Ohio State. Three-and-a-half hours later, the Spartans left Columbus with a 28-24 win to stun the crowd of 93,595 at the Horseshoe. “Great win, big win, and part of the history,” Michigan State coach Mark Dantonio, who was the secondary coach for the Spartans that season, said on Tuesday.
