COLUMBUS, Ohio – Most Ohio State starting quarterbacks over the last half-century are like Justin Fields and those just ahead of him, Dwayne Haskins and J.T. Barrett – from out of state. While Fields is the first Buckeye regular QB from Georgia over the last 50 years, out-of-state quarterbacks outnumber those from Ohio, 14-12, during the period starting with Rex Kern. Kern, the Buckeye starter from 1968 through 1970, is from Lancaster, Ohio. Don Lamka from Cleveland South followed in 1971. Since then, 14 the last 24 Buckeye regulars (as determined by the QB with the most passing yards each season) have been from other states. There were two each from Illinois (Mike Tomczak and Kent Graham), Maryland (Greg Hare and Haskins) and Texas (Rod Gerald and Barrett), and one each from seven other states and the District of Columbia.
