COLUMBUS, Ohio — Let’s start with Pete Werner’s neck. It grew. Werner played at around 235 pounds last season. He’s at 243 pounds now. To me, it looks like Ohio State’s junior linebacker gained 20 pounds rather than eight. He turned 21, he filled out without losing speed, and he reached the highest level of accomplishment in the OSU weight room grades. “The offseason was good for me,” Werner said, repeatedly praising OSU strength and conditioning coach Mickey Marotti. Marotti told me Werner’s body type makes 243 pounds the ideal size for him. He called him a great worker, said he added a lot of muscle mass. He’s different.
