Ohio State Buckeyes file trademark for 'THE'

Synonymous with academic excellence and athletics prestige, Ohio State wants to ensure its most famous moniker as The state university of Ohio is profitable — and only used by the Buckeyes — in many years to come. Per NBC News, application No. 88571984, filed with the U.S. Patent and Trademark Office last week, “was discovered and publicized Tuesday by Josh Gerben, a prominent trademark lawyer in Washington. The application seeks a trademark on the single word “THE” for use on T-shirts and baseball caps and hats.” The Buckeyes plan on incorporating The Ohio State University into several new apparel and merchandise options in the future and are hoping to get ahead of trademark rights for the name.
