Today’s Penn State football news headlines feature a prized linebacker recruit who committed to Ohio State and James Franklin’s thoughts on freshman playing time. The Lions made a late push for St. Bosco (Calif.) linebacker Kourt Williams and got an official visit from him last month, but the Buckeyes prevailed in the end over UCLA, Alabama, Oklahoma and a host of others. Williams is the No. 12 outside linebacker in the country and No. 162 player in the 247Sports composite. Franklin discussed the NCAA redshirt rule, which debuted last season and allowed freshmen to play in as many as four games without burning their redshirts. Franklin reflected on the staff’s strategy last season, when 16 of 24 freshmen redshirted, and said the strategy will be to play as many freshmen as possible in two games and save two games for later.
