Matthew Baldwin transfer from Ohio State shows lack of true backup QBs — and Buckeyes aren’t alone

Urban Meyer retired from Ohio State with a long list of accomplishments, including a perfect 7-0 record against rival Michigan, three Big Ten championships and a national title. Yet one of Meyer’s underrated achievements, one that we’ll look back on with appreciation with each new name to enter the transfer portal, is the fact he managed to keep quarterbacks Cardale Jones, J.T. Barrett and Braxton Miller on the same roster in the 2015 season. It’s a phenomenon the Buckeyes haven’t been able to replicate since, as evidenced by Matthew Baldwin entering the transfer portal Thursday – less than a week after he completed 20 of 36 passes for 246 yards, two touchdowns and two interceptions while splitting time between the Scarlet and Gray teams in the Ohio State spring game.
