Penn State Football: The (Sports) Science of a Friday Night at Illinois, Then a Whiteout vs. Ohio State

Penn State will play Illinois and Ohio State in back-to-back night games in September. And head coach James Franklin hopes Penn State’s burgeoning sports science program can help catapult the Nittany Lions to a pair of victories under unique and challenging circumstances. First, those circumstances: Penn State’s road game at Illinois’ Memorial Stadium on Friday, Sept. 21 kicks off at 8 p.m. local time — and 9 p.m. back in Happy Valley. After Champaign, the Nittany Lions host the toast of the Big Ten — Ohio State — the next Saturday (Sept. 29) in a Whiteout at Beaver Stadium that almost assuredly will be a night game. The road contest against the Illini will be Penn State’s first regular-season game not on a Saturday since Sunday, Aug. 27, 2000, when the Nittany Lions lost 29-5 to USC in New Jersey’s Giant Stadium.
