How Jonathan Allen earned an Ohio State offer after playing football for nine months

DAYTON, Ohio — Jonathan Allen saw an unfamiliar bespectacled face, jeans that were probably the wrong choice on a hot day last week and an untucked button-down shirt one size too big. Kind of a dad look. Allen had been a part of this drill before. He extended his right hand and said, “Nice to meet you, Coach.” Oh no, Jonathan. Not a coach. But thanks for the ego boost. That guy was just a lowly Ohio State writer hoping to talk to a player the Buckeyes are recruiting. Honest mistake, though. It’s become reflexive for Allen. If he’s getting called down to the office of Dunbar High School coach Darran Powell, it’s probably because someone has either called or is there in person with another scholarship offer for the Class of 2019 offensive tackle.
