They say you never want to be the coach who replaces a legend, but it worked out fine for Earle Bruce. Taking over at Ohio State in 1979 after Woody Hayes was fired, Bruce led the Buckeyes to an undefeated regular season and was named national coach of the year. The College Football Hall of Fame coach held other head coaching jobs before and after his stint at Ohio State, but he will be remembered for his time in Columbus. Bruce died Friday morning at his home in Powell, Ohio, the school announced. He turned 87 on March 8, and part of his birthday celebration included watching the Buckeyes’ spring practice session that day.
