Cincinnati hires Ohio State’s Luke Fickell as head football coach


Pulling from the ranks of one of the top collegiate programs in the country, the Cincinnati Bearcats have hired Ohio State Buckeyes; defensive coordinator Luke Fickell as their next head football coach, according to a report from ESPN. Fickell, a former Buckeyes’ player and graduate assistant, worked as an assistant coach in Columbus from 2002 until 2016. He rose from being a linebackers coach to a co-defensive coordinator in 2005. In 2011, after Jim Tressel was suspended by the NCAA, he took over as the Buckeyes’ interim head coach for five games. He would end up coaching the entire season due to Tressel resigning and never returning. Due to the chaos, the Buckeyes went 6-7, their worst record since 1988. When Urban Meyer was hired as the program’s head coach in 2012, he named Fickell as his co-defensive coordinator.
