COLUMBUS — The officials’ fourth-and-1 spot in double overtime will be debated for as long as Ohio State and Michigan play football — but the play never would have happened if not for Curtis Samuel. Before he was the clincher of Ohio State’s 30-27 win in double overtime against Michigan, Samuel was OSU’s savior. The Ohio State H-back somehow turned Ohio State’s third-and-9 play, which looked doomed from the beginning, into a positive play. Michigan defended Ohio State’s swing pass perfectly, and Samuel had no room. Instead of making peace with the play and settling for a short loss, Samuel darted well into the Ohio State backfield, weaved through defenders, and lurched forward for 8 yards.
