It came with nearly all of the fourth quarter left to play, a simple toss in the right flat to Ohio State University running back Demario McCall, who scampered down the right sideline for 36 yards and a touchdown. “It” happened to be former Athens High School standout quarterback Joe Burrow’s first-ever touchdown for OSU, which came during his second drive as a backup quarterback during OSU’s 77-10 win Sept. 2 over Bowling Green State University. Burrow also led the Buckeyes on another touchdown drive during his third offensive series. It was capped by a 16-yard touchdown run from McCall. Altogether, Burrow was 6-8 passing for 68 yards and a touchdown in his debut before 107,000 fans at Ohio Stadium, otherwise known as “The Horseshoe.” Burrow’s initial gameday experience was part of a record setting afternoon for Ohio State: 776 yards amassed, eclipsing an 86-year Ohio State record for offensive productivity.
