Ohio State football | Urban Meyer finds holes in dazzling debut

By all outward appearances, Ohio State’s 2016 debut was a smash. The Buckeyes set a school record with 776 yards. Their 77 points against Bowling Green were the most by the team in 86 years. The defense limited the Falcons offense to a field goal. But immediately after Saturday’s game, coach Urban Meyer cautioned that only after video study of the game would it truly be known whether the 77-10 victory was as dazzling as it appeared on the surface. Upon further review, it wasn’t. ‘I think it was good,’ Meyer said. ‘It wasn’t great.’ Consider the wide receivers. The Buckeyes’ young receivers did not produce when given the opportunity last year. On Saturday, nine different receivers caught passes and five scored touchdowns. ‘I don’t think that the technique of our wideouts was where it needs to be, even though they did make some very good plays,’ Meyer said. Quarterback J.T. Barrett concurred. ‘There were some times when we had some missed assignments out there, which we could have scored (on otherwise),’ said Barrett, who threw for six touchdowns and ran for another while earning Big Ten offensive player of the week honors.
