Ohio State Football: What Oklahoma's loss means for the Buckeyes


The Ohio State Buckeyes blasted the Bowling Green State Falcons 77-10 in the 2016 season opener, but that’s hardly the biggest news in Columbus this evening. #3 Oklahoma, who the Buckeyes play in week 3, lost today to #15 Houston 33-23 in their own season opener. Oklahoma was seen by many as a favorite to reach the College Football Playoff this season, mostly due to star quarterback Baker Mayfield and a host of other offensive weapons. Unfortunately for the Sooners (and the Big XII), a man named Tom Herman exists. The former Ohio State offensive coordinator and 2nd year head coach expertly developed a game plan to frustrate the more talented Sooners side. Senior quarterback Greg Ward Jr, running essentially the same offensive scheme as Urban Meyers’ Buckeyes, threw for 321 yards and two touchdowns, thoroughly dismantling a historically strong Oklahoma defense. The Houston defense also showed up, holding the Sooners to a mere 70 yards rushing. Ohio State vs. Oklahoma was supposed to be the premier top-five matchup this fall – that doesn’t seem likely anymore.
