Even Michigan State and Ohio State fans should concede this: The splash Jim Harbaugh has caused at Michigan has only helped the Big Ten overall. The Big Ten was decidedly overrated for decades. Yet, it has made huge strides in recent years. A breakthrough point was Ohio State winning the first College Football Playoff following the 2014 season. The Big Ten had captured only two national championships since 1968 before the Buckeyes prevailed – OSU in 2002 and Michigan 1997. As importantly, the Buckeyes routed Alabama from the vaunted SEC in the process. The Spartans have helped in that area, too, by beating Georgia, TCU, Stanford and Baylor in consecutive bowl games. But Alabama won back a large amount of respect for the SEC last season. The Crimson Tide simply destroyed MSU in the CFP semifinal, and sealed the deal by downing Clemson in the title game. Advertisement Michigan did earn the Big Ten a measure of cache by routing Florida in a bowl game. Ohio State also won its marquee bowl matchup with Notre Dame. …
