Ohio residents surveyed think Ohio State would beat Cleveland Browns

It’s an argument that is had almost every single year in sports all across the country: could the best team in college each season beat the worst team in that corresponding professional sports? There are plenty of people who think the 2015 Alabama Crimson Tide could handle the 2015 Tennessee Titans on the field (they are dead wrong, but more on that later). In the state of Ohio, there is plenty of belief that the Ohio State Buckeyes football teams of the past four seasons under Urban Meyer may be the best to ever take the field for the school. In the eyes of some fans and residents of the state, they may be the best teams to play the sport at any level in the state’s existence.Public Policy Polling, one of those groups that calls you during dinner and asks questions about your thoughts on certain issues, asked nearly 1,250 people a variety of questions ranging from their thoughts on the 2016 Presidential race to their thoughts on certain brands of chili. One question that got thrown in pertained to how the Buckeyes, fresh off a 13-1 season with what may have been a better team than their 2014 national championship squad, would do against the Cleveland Browns, one of the state’s two NFL teams. The results probably won’t surprise you: “This may be the greatest measure of what tough times these are for the Cleveland Browns: voters in the state think that in a head to head match up Ohio State would beat the Browns on the gridiron 57 percent to 23 percent.” This is one of the dumbest arguments every time it comes up. There is not one college championship team…NOT ONE…that would defeat a professional team, especially in football. The 2001 Miami Hurricanes, considered to be one of the best teams of all time, would get owned on the field by the 2001 Carolina Panthers, who were the worst team in the league that year at 1-15. Same with the 2004 and ’05 USC Trojans, the 1995 Nebraska Cornhuskers and, most recently, the 2013 FSU Seminoles and 2014 Buckeyes. While the gap might shrink a bit in other sports, last year’s Kentucky Wildcats team that was bound for greatness would get on all day by the Philadelphia Sixers or last year’s New York Knicks team. A college football team is lucky to have ten players drafted in a given year. A pro team has 53 players who, for the most part, were good enough to be drafted.
