From OSU athletics: COLUMBUS, Ohio – The Ohio State Buckeyes kicked off their 15-session spring drills with a two-hour practice Tuesday morning on what would become a lovely, 72-degree day in Columbus, Ohio. Watching over the Buckeyes courtesy of the giant video board on the indoor field of the Woody Hayes Athletic Center was a giant, breath-snorting head of a lone wolf because the Buckeyes have entered the “land of the wolves” this spring. Strength and conditioning coach Mick Marotti: “Wolves … It’s kind of the motto. You’re out there in the wilderness … and you’ve got to survive. That’s part of our young guys and [will be] the mentality of our young guys in the offseason.” Coach Urban Meyer’s 15th spring drills as a head coach features a roster that includes just 35 letterman off last year’s team, only six returning starters and 28 scholarship players with freshman eligibility status. Day 1 went as he hoped, though. “I was expecting high energy and that’s what we got,” Meyer told a rather large gathering of beat reporters and writers who cover the team. “We got what we wanted.” While Meyer cares more about effort than execution at this point, he said he knows that there is “obviously a lot of work to do.” The Buckeyes will be back at work on Thursday with spring practice session No. 2.
