Durtschi, it would be hard not to boast about it every possible moment. But the humblest of humble hardly made a peep about his career and only broke out stories when his children begged for a couple of hours. It is that attribute, along with his amazing athleticism, that lands him in the Crawford County Sports Hall of Fame on March 19. “This is a proud moment for our entire family,” said Bill Durtschi Jr., the oldest of Durtschi’s sons and his Hall of Fame presenter. “He would really be humbled by this award. He never talked about his background in sports. He just never talked about how good he was.” Durtschi, who passed away in 1994, remained tight-lipped despite producing one of the most impressive athletic resumes in Crawford County Sports Hall of Fame history. Excelling in football at Galion during the late 1930’s, Durtschi spent most of his time in the backfield as a tailback for the traditional powerhouse Galion Tigers. …
