The word of the season that has been synonymous with MSU football is overrated. They were all but out of the playoff talks when Nebraska won in Lincoln Memorial that Saturday night. But, then the Spartans marched into Columbus and Michael Geiger booted the game winner as time expired, Connor Cook’s offense hung 55 points on Penn State for senior day and L.J. Scott reached on third down into the end zone and crossed the goal line to beat Iowa. They’ve defied the odds for sure this season, the nation waited to see where the Spartans would be slotted in the College Football Playoff. Many were expecting the four seed and having to play Clemson in Miami. But with the resume that the Spartans accumulated over the season (beating four top fifteen teams in the playoff rankings), it was hard for the committee not to grant the Spartans the three seed and face Alabama in the Cotton Bowl. The Spartans will always remember what happened in the 2015 Cotton Bowl against Baylor. Coming in as currently a nine and a half point underdog, here is why the Spartans will knock off the Crimson Tide on New Year’s Eve: Now, before I start to talk about the keys to victory for the Spartans and before you start laughing at what some may believe to be a “crazy idea”, we should rewind to January 1, 2015. This was the day that the number four seeded Ohio State Buckeyes defeated the number one seeded Alabama Crimson Tide in Louisiana. Now, we should credit Ezekiel Elliott for a truly remarkable performance against Alabama and it was one of the major reasons why OSU even stood a chance. …
