Teams will rise and fall on circumstances we can’t possibly predict. Some otherwise good team will wind up with Jeremy Johnson as their starting quarterback. Injuries can force a team to run a Single Wing offense in their last game of the season. A new head coach can come in and completely change the culture at a school, turning a moribund program into a dominant one. In another, broader sense of the word, it’s actually pretty easy to predict how good college football teams will be next year. Most of college football’s blue bloods have dynastic tendencies. They recruit well. They perform well on both sides of the ball. They keep the same coaching staff and pay them well. We can even see this in the numbers. …
