Joe Bauserman stepped up and made some nice throws during the first half. More importantly, he made good decisions and didn’t make critical mistakes, which is expected of a first time starter. However, Braxton Miller took some criticism from announcers Chris Spielman and Urban Meyer, because he seemed to not be involved in the game. He was not with the QB coach, or other QB’s listening to the play calls, or have a playbook in front of him looking at the plays. So, either he believes he knows everything , or the coaches aren’t doing their job by making him get involved. Too early to tell how that will play out.
Carlos Hyde played most of the game at running back for Ohio State. He looked pretty good, and I was suprised to learn he was the fastest recorded Ohio State RB. Ran a 4.4 40 yard dash for a 240 lb guy. Rod Smith made a crucial error and fumbled on the 5 yard line. He did have a couple of good runs and will get some coaching on how to hold on to the ball.
Defense looked impressive. Didn’t make any mistakes, and well Akron had 0 points.
Luke Fickell made the fans happy when he went for it on 4th and 1. Showing some aggressiveness early on. Looks poised and not overwhelmed on the sidelines. So far so good for Coach Fickell.
MVP of the half: Jake Stoneburner. Two Receiving TD’s. Also was impressive at run blocking.
All in all, it was a good first half. I’m excited about the talent we have. Just an FYI: Mark May wasn’t impressed at all. Lou Holtz was though. Good to see nothing has changed in the media world.
